Torresol Energy
Torresol Energy, resulting from the alliance between SENER and MASDAR, has been established with the aim of becoming the world leader in the Concentration Solar Power (CSP) sector and with the mission to promote the development and exploitation of large concentration solar plants all around the world.
In the short term, Torresol Energy will concentrate its efforts on the development of already started projects such as GEMASOLAR –a 17 MW plant based on central tower technology, TERMESOL and ARCOSOL –two 50 MW plants with parabolic troughs- located in Seville and Cadiz (Spain). In the medium term, Torresol Energy will promote the construction of at least two Concentration Solar Energy plants per year. In this way, the production base installed in 2010 will add up to nearly 320 MW and will come close to 1,000 MW in ten years time.
At the same time, each new Torresol Energy project will introduce and test new technologies with the aim of making Concentration Solar Power an economically competitive option and a real, viable, ecological and sustainable alternative to traditional power sources. In this sense, protecting the environment for future generations is one of Torresol Energy’s institutional commitments.
The company’s main action areas for the design, construction and commissioning of CSP plants will be in Southern Europe, including Spain, Northern Africa, the Middle East, and the south east of the USA, where Torresol Energy will promote plants with central receiver tower system based on the experience from the projects in Spain and Abu Dhabi.
Apart from the aforementioned GEMASOLAR, TERMESOL and ARCOSOL projects, Torresol Energy’s specific objectives in Southern Europe are centred on promoting the construction of a new CSP plant in Spain, at the same time as promoting projects in Portugal, Italy and Greece. In the Middle East and Northern Africa, in addition to the imminent construction of a power plant in Abu Dhabi, the new company hopes to design and build another three CSP power plants before 2012. Finally, it is planning to establish a collaboration agreement in the United States with a renewable energy company to start the design of at least one CPS plant in the south east of the country.
SENER Grupo de Ingeniería will control 60% of Torresol Energy and MASDAR, the remaining 40%. The Spanish holding will contribute all its experience in the design of high technology that has positioned it as a leader in world engineering. For its part, MASDAR will contribute with this initiative to diversifying Abu Dhabi’s economy and strengthening the country’s image as an active agent in the global fight for the sustainable development of the Planet.
